Scientists warn that the Titanic wreck might soon be lost forever, as the first dive expedition in 14 years revealed that key sections of the ship have deteriorated significantly. During the first manned mission to the Titanic's remains in over a decade, explorers discovered that part of the ship's hull had collapsed, and the Captain’s quarters had suffered severe damage.

Located nearly 13,125 feet (4,000 meters) below the Atlantic Ocean’s surface, where the water is a frigid one degree Celsius, the Titanic has been subjected to relentless saltwater corrosion and metal-eating bacteria, which have gradually eroded parts of the ship’s structure. The dive team found that the hull near the officers' quarters on the starboard side of the ship is beginning to cave in, causing the luxurious staterooms to deteriorate as well, according to the exploration company Caladan Oceanic.
