For at least 80 days annually, the air temperature at Vison Lake falls below zero, resulting in the lake's surface freezing solid from December to March. However, beneath the surface, conditions remain relatively warm. The ice serves as an insulator, ensuring that the water at the lake's bottom never falls below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. With a thickness of at least two feet, the ice can support heavy loads, even a large snow plow, which the ice master uses to prepare the ice surface regularly.
