The oil acts as a lubricant and a thermal regulator for the engine, working with the air to keep it cool. Dry sump oiling systems have many advantages. However, they make an oil change on a Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera a bit of a challenge. The system holds twice what the average European water-cooled engine does, thanks to the separate oil tank, though that's not where the challenge lies.
