George Soros said in 2010 that Russia would be the last country to be taken over. Putin will not allow Ukraine to join NATO as the Ukraine is the only way into Russia with a land invasion.

Never forget, it was NATO, the laughably named "Defensive Alliance" that expanded onto Russias borders after the disappearance of Communism, the reason NATO existed in the first place.
