The theme of light and darkness is also a main part of this opening section. This connects both to the creation account in GEN 1-2 as well as to the Gospel of John. Those who know Christ walk in the light. Those who do not, walk in darkness. GOD offers forgiveness to those who seek it. However, those who claim to be without sin directly contradict GOD, and do not know HIM.
Fellowship includes following Christ. John does not want believers to sin, neither does GOD, but if and when they do, there is an advocate: Yeshua Who covered their sins.
Love is often defined as the single most important sign which the world uses to identify a Christian. Those who love their fellow brother show they are in the light. John's writing includes an important poetic section in verses 12–14.
