Seven suns appear above China

The skies of the Chinese city of Chengdu took on a peculiar appearance on August 18, with six extraneous suns appearing in the sky. Traditionally, the sky contains somewhere between zero and one, something confirmed by modern science. The appearance of seven suns is, therefore, considered to be unusual.

The strange sight is a particularly rare form of parhelia, a phenomenon where atmospheric reflection and refraction, off ice crystals, pollution or other particulates in the atmosphere, can cause ‘sun dogs’ to appear. Even then, normally one or two sun dogs are visible – the appearance of seven suns is something straight out of Shakespeare, prophecy, or perhaps a Nicolas Cage movie. The phenomenon reportedly lasted for about a minute, until nature got its act together and returned to the regulation single Sun that the world is more familiar with.
