A welfare check escalated into a shooting when a man charged at a deputy with a knife.

On Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 11:12 a.m., deputies from the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to 53rd Street and Cedar Street, Jurupa Valley, to check the welfare of a male subject who appeared to be bleeding and disoriented. Upon arrival, deputies contacted the male and began to provide medical aid. While the deputy was tending to the male’s medical needs, he produced a knife and began to stab himself. The male charged toward the deputy with the knife, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was struck by gunfire, and deputies rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
