The city has experienced a 13-percent rise in homelessness since last year and has their largest population of people who are homeless since 2019. The grant money could benefit the 450 families in Kalamazoo that are on a waitlist to get housing and financial assistance from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority as MSHDA has said it will not release new vouchers for the foreseeable future. The city will work with Kalamazoo County on the issue.
