Gorilla Drama - Biddy, Shufai, and the Battle for Dominance

*Gorilla drama at Twycross Zoo as Shufai challenges his 51-year-old grandma Biddy in a battle for dominance.*

Gorilla Shufai from Twycross Zoo is at it again with his grandma Biddy. There is a tense atmosphere between mother Biddy and daughter Ozala. Biddy was just about to go inside when Shufai charged after her, trying to grab or push her through the door flap. Despite turning 51 in December 2024, Biddy is no pushover. She comes back out and pushes him away.

Every time there is an issue between Biddy and Shufai, Biddy's daughter, and Shufai’s mother, Ozala, always takes her son's side, creating noticeable tension between mother and daughter. Biddy tries to go inside when Shufai comes and beats his chest at her. She moves inside carefully, anticipating that.

Shufai will have another go at her. Biddy sits by the wall. They love the wall because it absorbs quite a bit of heat from the sun, and they enjoy leaning against it. Unfortunately, there's a bit less space now since the hammock is back, though at least this time, it’s off the ground, unlike before.

Shufai was on the hut, climbing down onto the straps and throwing himself backwards onto it. He dismounts, sits down, then gets back up again, kicking the hut. I wonder where he learned that from. :-)

Looking closely at Biddy, you might wonder what she’s thinking. Biddy sits on the grass, and every time she moves, Shufai follows her. Ozala is standing up top, watching. Gorillas think in terms of hierarchy, not fairness. They follow Biddy around the other side. Silverback Oumbi pays no attention to what's going on; he’s just happy eating. Ozala takes her dominant stance. Oumbi glances over but doesn’t seem particularly bothered. Ozala then beats her chest at her mother. Oumbi grumbles slightly (it’s not heard, but you can see him move) before continuing to eat.

Biddy moves away, constantly looking behind her to stay alert. She knows Shufai will try something again. With Shufai still following her, he eventually seizes his chance and pounces to hit her again. Biddy quickly turns around, bares her teeth, and chases him down the slope, out of sight. Back up the slope, Shufai is after her again. Ozala is eating now, no longer watching the two.

There’s peace for about five minutes, then Shufai is on the climbing frame, with Biddy below. He runs and jumps down next to his grandma. Biddy is sitting back by the warm wall again when her grandson approaches her once more, beating his chest. This time, Biddy has had enough and chases him off, moving with lightning speed.

They’re back again by the climbing frame. When Shufai jumps down, kicking the barrel, Biddy instinctively moves back. Ozala has a nap by the wall and Shufai finds some leftover cabbage.
