Cody Charles Long, 32, faces multiple felony charges related to domestic violence and aggravated assault on an officer.

The shooting happened at DoubleTree by Hilton near Interstate 10 and Chandler Boulevard just before midnight on March 22, 2024

911 tapes revealed that a hotel employee first reported that a woman asked for a hotel, stating that she was being held against her will in a room for several hours.

The victim claimed that she had been assaulted at gunpoint by a man she knew.

When officers arrived at the DoubleTree, they got a report of a second 911 call from an employee who was with the victim. The employee then passed the phone to the victim.

“He tried - he’s trying to kill me,” the victim said to dispatchers. “I just need you to come. I’m hiding right now in the bedroom.”

She continued, “He’s already tried to kill me.”

The employee then tells dispatchers that the suspect was trying to leave the hotel.

In a critical incident briefing, Chandler Police Sgt. Ricardo Gonzales explained that as two officers arrived at the southwest corner of the building, they found a man who matched the suspect description in the parking lot.

As one officer tried to make contact, the edited video appeared to show Long firing multiple rounds, causing both officers to take cover behind a patrol vehicle.

One officer then fired his gun at Long.

A different officer, who was inside the hotel, heard the radio traffic and then went outside. That officer also fired his weapon after telling the suspect several times to drop his gun.

“Drop it now. Drop it,” could be heard from the third officer before more rounds of gunfire.

Police said shortly after the shooting that Long was hit in the lower part of his body. The video appears to show officers trying to give medical attention to Long moments later.

Long was hospitalized before taking to the Maricopa County jail.
