Try adding footwork to your drill! With the ball feed’s slow pace, you’ve got extra time between shots—time you can use to boost your fitness and improve your game.

Here’s how I do it:
1. Hit the Ball – Start by returning a shot that resembles a serve from the ball machine. Ball machine is positioned on top of my pickup basket, aiming cross-court and try to have the ball land mid to deep in the service box.
2. Move Forward – Immediately after hitting, move quickly to the Non-Volley Zone (NVZ).
3. Scoot Back – Step backwards from the NVZ, very carefully so you don’t fall backwards while getting ready for your next shot.
4. Step Out – Shuffle step to the right, then to the left, keeping your feet moving and staying engaged. Go as fast or slowly as you want depending on your fitness level. Don’t rush. All your footwork movements add up!
5. Be Ready – Reset your stance and prepare for the next feed.

After about 15 hits, you’ll need to reload the machine—take this as a quick break before diving back in. Repeat as many times as you want, adjusting the drill to suit your style and stamina.

Bonus Tip: Elevate your Franklin Pickleballer by placing it on a ball picker-upper basket closer to the net. This setup lets you practice hitting an Around the Post (ATP) shot. With the cross-court feed, run to the ball, wait for the perfect moment, and hit the ATP shot. It’s challenging, fun, and totally repeatable.

Bonus Bonus Tip: Film your practice session with a light weight tripod and watch the playback later. You will see how you did. Did you hit through the ball? Did you move up to the NVZ line? Did you pick up your feet carefully when moving backwards? Did you shuffle without crossing your feet?

At the end of practice, you’ve hit more balls than you realize.
You’ve practiced footwork and worked on cardio.
You practiced forehands and backhands.
Perhaps you even tried the ATP!
