Reckless tourists flee eruption after ignoring volcano warnings

Volcanoes sometimes explode. Some people, it seems, need reminding of this. Climbers attempting to explore the Malupang Warirang Crater on Indonesia’s Mount Dukono were given an incredibly visceral reminder of this fact when they ignored all the warnings about the mountain exploding, only to find themselves on top of the mountain while it was exploding. Tourists had been given a warning from the local authorities that they should stay at least three kilometers away from the crater due to expected volcanic activity, yet, for reasons known only to them, this group decided to scale the volcano anyway.

Cue the massive explosion they’d been told to avoid. Still apparently dumbfounded that an exploding volcano can, in fact, explode, the group appeared rooted to the spot, until eventually the wall of boiling smoke and ash and sulfur was able to ram home the point: get away from the exploding volcano because the exploding volcano is exploding. As lumps of charred planet Earth fell all around them, the group could only hurry down the exploding volcano in horror as a wall of geological death chased them. They survived. Perhaps they needed more warnings about the danger of climbing active volcanoes while they’re exploding?
