Hydrogen seems to be the latest health craze and so I thought I’d give it a try and bought the entry level ALTHY-H2-CLASSIC1 for less than £40 on AliExpress and was rather impressed by it. Now it is time to try one of their upmarket and more powerful models, the Althy H2-005 Hydrogen Water Bottle. although at £98 is is very much more expensive.
In the rather impressive and upmarket box, you receive the unit itself, a USB-C charging cable, an external bottle adapter, and a user guide. Curiously, unlike with the cheaper model, this time no inhalation tube was included and the bottle itself has a smaller capacity. Build quality all seems first rate with the base and top of the unit made from robust plastic and the 270ml bottle from glass. Take note that the bottle comes with a protective screw top for the membrane unit and when not in use for any length of time this should be replaced along with a small amount of water to keep the membrane moist.
This unit uses the latest generation of USA Dupont NAFION - 117 Membrane with SPE&PEM dual-chamber hydrogen and oxygen separation electrolysis technology, and produces and retains 99.99% pure hydrogen, through electrolysis. It puts only pure H2 into the water, and Oxygen(O2), Ozone(O3) Chlorine(CL2) are separated are vented out through the base. It uses the Althy Nano bubble technology which allows hydrogen to remain in the water for a longer time. Compared with the same type of hydrogen-rich water cup, the decay rate of hydrogen will be slower and the storage time will be longer.
According to the Althy website, almost any type of clean water can be used including tap water, but I only use boiled tap water or bottled water with it. Some older and cheaper rivals do not separate chlorine and other inert gases from the water allowing them to be released into the water.
This device generates hydrogen that can be ingested in two ways. The internal glass bottle can be used to add hydrogen to water which can then be decanted and drank. An external spring water bottle can be attached to the base of the unit and the hydrogen added to it. I would suppose that with your own external inhalation tube, the gas could be consumed that was as the outlet nozzle seems the same as on the Classic1.
The unit has a built-in 1100mAh rechargeable battery and this should be good for around 15 6-minute production cycles. The unit is charged through the USB-C port on the base with the red charging LED changing to green when the process is complete.
To use the unit with the internal bottle, fill the bottle up to about 80% or less – space needs to be left to allow space for the gas – and press the button on the front of the unit. Press the button once: to enter 6-minute mode and it produces up to 2000ppb (parts per billion) of hydrogen. Press the button twice: for 12-minute mode to generate up to 4000ppb. A beep sounds to confirm operation and the timer display above the button to show the current progress. For maximum H2 concentration, the 12 minute mode can be used up to three times in succession to give up to 5000ppb but remember to open the top briefly between operations to release air pressure.
Unlike my other model, this one has an exciting colour changing OLED breathing light which is said to can relax people and improve sleep quality.
The OLED display allows you to confirm the operating status of the bottle from a distance.
I have only used it once with an external bottle and this screwed easily to the base of the unit with no adapter needed but an adapter is supplied for use with other bottle types.
So what are the benefits of Hydrogen Water?
All sorts of benefits and health giving properties are claimed including:
Acting as a powerful antioxidant, helping to neutralize harmful free radicals in the body.
Anti-inflammatory effects, potentially reducing the risk of inflammatory conditions.
Enhance athletic performance by reducing muscle fatigue and improving recovery time.
Potentially mitigate the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Improvements in skin texture, tone, and elasticity after regularly consuming hydrogen water.
Promote digestive health by reducing oxidative stress in the gastrointestinal tract.
Drinking hydrogen-enriched water may improve hydration at a cellular level.
Most of these claims are based on findings from small scale or non-validated research and may or may not prove to be worthwhile.
I have been drinking four glasses daily for the last few weeks and have not noticed any great health benefits although I do seem to be sleeping longer and more soundly. I will keep on with it as, if nothing else, the routine of using it does keep me better hydrated.
As H2 water bottles go, this one seems to be of premium quality and is well made and so far as I can tell works well. If you want to try H2 water then this seems a pretty good way to start.
