George Whitefield originally came to the colonies to serve as an Anglican priest in Georgia, but faced with the conspicuous misery and poverty of the region, he returned to England to raise funds to build an orphanage. On his return, his gifts as an evangelist became evident, catching the attention of Benjamin Franklin and Gilbert Tennent.
