Israeli Zionist Runs For Gaza

On March 30th, 2019 Israeli-Zionist and professional tri-athlete Tom Wassermann bravely registered and participated in the GAZA 5K run in New York City. This event was organized to raise money for children suffering from mental health issues due to the conflict in Gaza over the past several years.

When it comes to the conflict, there is always a greater context that must be understood and definitely deep emotions that run through those affected from it on all sides.

Regardless of the context or narrative, one is associated to, innocent lives are affected on both sides and the only way to break out of this one Vs the other paradigm is for the populations on both sides to start seeing and valuing the humanity of the other.

Our goal was to prove that Israelis and Zionists could show solidarity with innocent children from Gaza suffering from the conflict, having nothing to do with political positions and without using this opportunity to point fingers or wage blame.

Change can begin when we can see each other's humanity especially passed the names and symbols that we carry.

Tom won 3rd place in the race, but things got violent and he was not able to stay long enough to receive his award since his safety was at serious risk. At first, many individuals came up to Tom congratulating him on his courage and efforts in participating with a message of coexistence. However, it didn't take long for people to begin swarming him with severe death threats and eventually punches were thrown at Tom.

We need to solve the injustices that both experience. We need to fulfill the aspirations that both need. The only we do that. Is together.

It takes two to challenge the status quo. Let's not wait for another generation. Our time is now.
