Police say three officers shot and killed a man in west Houston who was accused of threatening people in the area with a knife, according to the Houston Police Department.

HPD said the man ignored repeated commands to drop the knife and then charged at them, so they shot him inside a cemetery on Westheimer Road.

The officers had responded to an assault call at a gas station on South Dairy Ashford when the suspect took off and ran into the cemetery.

Investigators said they tried to "peacefully de-escalate the situation" while the suspect yelled at the officers to shoot him as he ran through the cemetery. He charged at the officers twice with a knife before they shot him, according to HPD.

The 27-year-old man, whose name hasn't been released, was taken to an area hospital, but he didn't survive.

HPD said no officers were hurt.
