Gaza morgue volunteer prioritises work amid rising casualties, finds solace in family moments

Nawaf al-Zurai, a volunteer at the Al-Aqsa Hospital morgue in Deir el-Balah, prioritises his work over his home life, believing that caring for the deceased serves the entire community. Since the war began, he has encountered a significant increase in casualties, particularly after 7 October, and struggles with shortages of essential supplies. Despite the grim nature of his work, he continues to find solace in small moments of normality, such as registering his newborn granddaughter, Sham, and tending to his garden, emphasising that life must go on despite the war.
