King Shahryar of India and China, a just ruler beloved by his people, yearns to see his younger brother, King Shah Zaman of Samarkand, after twenty years. Shahryar sends a letter and lavish gifts, inviting Shah Zaman to visit. Shah Zaman agrees but, before departing, discovers his wife in bed with a lowly cook. In a fit of rage, he kills them both and leaves for Shahryar’s court, but he remains deeply troubled by his wife’s betrayal. Upon arriving at his brother’s palace, Shah Zaman witnesses a similar infidelity involving Shahryar’s wife and a slave. This discovery lessens his own sorrow, leading him to believe that all women are unfaithful. His health improves, and he finally shares his observations with Shahryar, setting the stage for the stories that follow in One Thousand and One Nights.
