Seattle Police arrested a juvenile suspect after a failed carjacking attempt and foot pursuit in South Park last month.

On July 17th at 5:52 p.m., patrol officers responded to a report of an attempted auto theft by multiple juveniles near Dallas Avenue South and South Southern Street.

Officers determined that the group of teens arrived in the area in a stolen vehicle that had broken down. When they attempted to steal another car, the legally armed driver woke up and scared them off.

The dumped stolen vehicle was recovered. Various rounds of ammunition and spent shell casings were also recovered from inside of it. No firearms were located.

When officers located the group of teens, two of them immediately fled on foot and were not located. When being detained for questioning, another young male fled into the neighborhood, initiating a foot pursuit.

The suspect, 16, was caught a few blocks away and arrested for attempted Theft of a Motor Vehicle. The other involved parties, including the young women, were released from custody at the scene.

Police booked the suspect into juvenile detention at the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children & Family Justice Center. Multiple pieces of evidence were recovered from the young man, including a balaclava, and a loaded handgun magazine.

Detectives with the General Investigations Unit took the lead on this case. The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed charges against the suspect on July 21st.
