A second eruption of Mount Etna has been recorded on the Italian island of Sicily. This is the second eruption of Etna in a week.

Images show stretches of smoke, debris and lava spilling from the famous Sicilian volcano - one of the most active in the world. It comes just a week after Europe's tallest volcano caused mass travel disruption amid another eruption over the Mediterranean island of Sicily.

The resulting cloud of ash and smoke stopped flights at Catania airport, with several flights diverted to Palermo and Comiso due to poor visibility. Nearby towns were covered in black volcanic ash.

According to the Volcano discovery portal , the ash column reached a height of several kilometers. The eruption continues to intensify and has reached the stage of pulsating lava fountains.

Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has seen intense activity in recent days, spewing hot ash and lava.

Volcanic activity from Etna has intensified this week, with vigorous explosions following a four-year dormancy period.

The 3,330-metre-high volcano is the tallest in Europe, and is believed to have the longest documented history of eruptions among all volcanoes
