Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced he will step down next month, creating potential political uncertainty for one of the U.S.’s closest allies in Asia.

Kishida, whose approval rating had dropped to 25%, cited the need for change within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) as his reason for not seeking reelection as party president.

His tenure faced criticism over his handling of a fundraising scandal and the party’s ties to the Unification Church.

Kishida’s resignation could lead to a competitive race within the LDP to choose his successor, with no clear frontrunner, NPR has reported.
