For several years Hillel was chair of Democrats Abroad in Israel.

He is co-editor of the award winning Palestine Israel Journal http://www.pij.org. On May 13th in Vienna, Hillel and his Palestinian colleague and co-editor, Ziad AbuZayyad, received with the 2024 Ari Rath Prize for Critical Journalism on behalf of Palestine-Israel Journal, given by the Bruno Kriesky Forum for International Dialogue.
