A modern interpretation of the 1919 song "A Soldier's Dream” by Vernon E. Leighton.

Time Period: The Great War/ WW1
Original lyrics:

Where the noisy cannon roar,
On a field of mud and gore
There I lay beneath a rocket lighted sky

Shot and shell around me fell
Sights of death and sounds of hell,
In my ears an ailing comrade’s parting cry;

After days of fiercest fighting,
All in efforts bold uniting,
Given at last an hour of respite from the fray,

Welcome sleep came hovering over me
Like an angel form she bore me
To the pleasant land of dreams where Peace holds sway;

Brave we’d fought to drive the foe,
With success we’d dealt our blow
Huns were on the run from Belgium to the Rhine

And my heart beat warm and true,
O my dearest still for you
As when first I won your heart and called you mine.
Deaf and blind to horrors round me,
What cared I for plan that bound me?
We had conquered in our battle for the right,
And the very stars above me seemed to whisper that you love me,
And I knew your prayers upheld me through the night;

[Chorus]
And I was dreaming,
Was sweetly dreaming
Of you my darling so far away;
Your face was beaming
