The horizontal single-cylinder four-stroke cycle gas engine was manufactured by Crossley Brothers Ltd in Manchester. This was the initial type of internal-combustion engine that operated on Otto's four-stroke principle, which was patented in 1876. Therefore, this engine is considered as the direct predecessor of modern-day piston internal-combustion engines.
