This year Burkina Faso is marking the 64th anniversary since its independence.

For many years this West African country was a client state of its former colonial power, France.

However, since coming to power in a September 2022 coup, Burkina Faso's revolutionary government has pulled away from France.

The government led by President Ibrahim Traore has kicked out French troops, suspended several French media outlets, and established stronger ties with Russia.

This West African country is clearly on a path towards true independence.

Elsewhere, Nigeria has fined US tech giant Meta 220 million dollars for violating its local consumer, data protection, and privacy laws in relation to its social media networks, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

The penalty was slammed on the companies after three years of intensive investigations.

Is the abuse of market dominance by firms such as Meta a new form for Africa?
