I'm sure by now the shop owner and building owner have been properly threatened and intimidated by Kamala Harris & US Secret Service. Enough to prevent any lawsuit. You have to realize, federal employees truly feel that rules and laws don't apply to them, especially those in federal law enforcement.

To me the most egregious part of their entire escapade is that they appear to just be doing business as usual. Coming equipped with tape, apparently not worrying about fingerprints nor being seen on camera prior to taping, just going in helping themselves to whatever they want and laughing about it. Their supervisor of course said, not my people, we are good upstanding people, until it was on camera. If not on camera they would have continued to deny and blame it on someone else, of course a conservative out to get them. I don't trust the SS, the FBI, the CIA, Homeland Security, and most of congress.

The intrusion happened on July 27, ahead of Vice President Harris's first in-person fundraiser since becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee.

The owner of the Four One Three Salon, Alicia Powers, told Business Insider that she closed her Pittsfield, Massachusetts, business that day at the request of the Secret Service, which examined the area earlier in the week. The salon is located behind the Colonial Theatre, a performing arts space in the Berkshires, where Harris spoke.

"They had a bunch of people in and out of here doing a couple of bomb sweeps again — totally understand what they have to do, due to the nature of the situation," Powers told Business Insider. "And at that point, my team felt like it was a little bit chaotic, and we just made the decision to close for Saturday."

A Secret Service spokesperson told Business Insider that the agency's employees "would not enter" without the permission of the business owner, but acknowledged an agent taped over the security camera lens.

At 8:10 that Saturday morning, a Secret Service agent — wearing a dark suit and open-collared white shirt, but no pin on her lapel — walked up to the salon's front entrance while swinging a roll of masking tape in her left hand. She looked at the door. Then she looked at the security camera on the porch. Then she looked at the door again.

She walked away. When she returned two minutes later, she grabbed a chair from the porch, stood on it, and taped over the Ring security camera that had been watching her.

The door was locked. But later that afternoon, another security camera, pointing at the door from the inside of the building, spotted four other people over the course of nearly two hours.

Two people wearing emergency medical services uniforms and one person in a camouflage law enforcement uniform walked in. The fourth person, wearing a dark suit and white shirt like a Secret Service officer, stood by the door.

The salon's security alarm rang the whole time. The security footage from the two cameras, which Powers shared with BI, doesn't show anyone allowing the people in.

"There were several people in and out for about an hour-and-a-half — just using my bathroom, the alarms going off, using my counter, with no permission," Powers said.

"And then when they were done using the bathroom for two hours, they left, and left my building completely unlocked, and did not take the tape off the camera," she continued.

Powers told BI that an EMS worker later told her the Secret Service agent in charge of security that day "was telling people to come in and use the bathroom."

BI asked Secret Service spokesperson Melissa McKenzie whether the agency invited other people to use the bathroom. She told BI that agency employees "would not" tell someone to enter the salon without the owner's permission.

When Powers returned to the property later that day, she found the door's lock looked like it had been picked, she told BI.

The people who entered the Four One Three Salon didn't do much damage aside from leaving an untidy bathroom behind, Powers said.

But what bothered her was what she saw as sheer disregard for her business, by entering without permission and leaving the place unlocked when they left, she said.

Powers said she felt "violated."

"Whoever was visiting, whether it was a celebrity or not, I probably would've opened the door and made them coffee and brought in donuts to make it a great afternoon for them," she told BI. "But they didn't even have the audacity to ask for permission. They just helped themselves."

Brian Smith, the building's landlord, said he didn't give the Secret Service permission to use the property either.

"Me and my dad own the building, and I have a crazy eccentric guy that lives upstairs," Smith told BI. "And he didn't tell the Secret Service they could use it, and I didn't tell them, and my father didn't tell them, and they had no permission to go in there whatsoever."

The Secret Service apologized after BI reached out
The day after BI initially reached out to the Secret Service for comment for this story — more than a week after it entered the business — an agency spokesperson said it had "since communicated" with Powers.

"The U.S. Secret Service works closely with our partners in the business community to carry out our protective and investigative missions," McKenzie wrote in an email to BI. "The Secret Service has since communicated with the affected business owner."

"We hold these relationships in the highest regard and our personnel would not enter, or instruct our partners to enter, a business without the owner's permission," she added.

Bill Pickle, a former Secret Service special agent, who previously oversaw training for the agency, told Business Insider that it's conceivable why a member of the Secret Service would tape over the security camera lens.

Pickle speculated that someone from the agency's technical services division — which handles explosives, bugging, wiring, and other physical security risks — may have wanted to limit visibility of Harris's whereabouts if the vice president were to walk into the camera's view.

But invading the property to use the bathroom "sounds weird," Pickle told BI.

"We just don't go in and take place or seize it," Pickle said. "The only time you do that is if it's a crime scene or if there's a real threat."

Powers said she contacted a local Secret Service field office after the incident, and that a person there told her to ask the local police, who said they knew nothing about it.

"I know for certain none of our members were involved in this," Pittsfield Police Captain Matthew Hill told BI.

On Thursday morning — the day after BI reached out to the agency for comment — the head of the Secret Service's Boston-based field office called Powers to apologize, she said.

"He said to me everything that was done was done very wrong," Powers said. "They were not supposed to tape my camera without permission. They were not supposed to enter the building without permission."

Powers said the Secret Service representative she spoke to offered to have the salon cleaned and pay her alarm company bill for the day. Powers said he also offered to visit and apologize in person over a cup of coffee.

Powers said she'd take him up on it.

"I want him to see the salon, and I want him to see what I do for the community, and be in this space, and have an understanding as to how this could have been ruined with the slightest wrong move," she said.

But they didn’t ask Powers, or her landlord, she said. Instead, they taped over a security camera on the back porch, broke into the salon, helped themselves to the bathroom, ate the mints on the counter and left without tidying up the bathroom or locking the back door on the way out.

Powers said the Secret Service’s Boston office has apologized on behalf of the agency. She also said Pittsfield Police officers up to and including Chief Thomas Dawley have been helpful and supportive of her efforts to get accountability.

The person she spoke with at the Secret Service confirmed that the woman who taped over the Ring camera at about 8:12 a.m. July 27 was with the agency. She also said the agency offered to pay to have the salon cleaned and pay for any damages, and also pay for the business’ private alarm bill “because it was going off for so long.”

“I was happy with his apology. It's a little bit of accountability. Again, I wasn't looking to do anything,” Powers said.

But she was particularly alarmed about the agents leaving the space so vulnerable after they left.

“We're a small business. We've all worked incredibly hard to build this business," she said. "This is our livelihood. And it could have been taken from all of my 12 employees in a flash.”

A voice mail message left Friday at the Secret Service’s Boston office seeking comment was not returned by press time Friday. But Secret Service spokesperson Melissa McKenzie told iBerkshires, which first reported the incident, that the agency had reached out.

"We hold these relationships in the highest regard and our personnel would not enter, or instruct our partners to enter, a business without the owner's permission," McKenzie said, according to the report. While the apology helped, Powers still feels violated, disrespected and a little angry.

“When they cleaned up and they left the tape on my camera and they left my back door completely unlocked," she said. "What could have happened in that hour and a half or two hours that you guys left the building unlocked?”

A city native, Powers worked at salons across the county before opening Four One Three Salon more than five years ago, in what was formerly a suite of law offices.

The Secret Service first approached Powers on that Tuesday, and conducted a security sweep of the building Thursday. In the meantime, Powers headed to Cape Cod for a previously scheduled vacation.

At 8:12 a.m. Saturday, Powers’ phone alerted her that there was activity on the salon’s back porch. “She walked around the porch, walked around the side of the building and then popped back up on the porch, grabbed the chair, hopped up and taped the camera," Powers said of what the footage showed. "It blacked out the camera completely.”

Powers drove home from Cape Cod, arriving at 1 p.m., and checked her phone upon arrival. It told her that people started entering the building about 12:42 p.m.

How does she know? “Because I have cameras everywhere,” she said.

For two hours, people came and left the salon, she said.

“From the communication I've heard from the EMS workers, somebody dressed in all black was telling them to come in and use the bathroom all afternoon,” she said. She heard a similar story from Berkshire County Sheriff’s deputies when she drove to her business at 4 p.m., after the crowd that gathered for a glimpse of Harris had gone home.

Powers reached out to Pittsfield Police and let them know what happened. They confirmed city officers had not used the salon’s bathroom, then put her in touch with a Secret Service representative in New York.

“He was telling me that it couldn't have been them; it's not what they do. They ask for permission,” Powers said she was told by the New York Secret Service office. “And he kind of ended the conversation with telling me, 'Do you think we need to deal with this right now with what we have going on?' And my response was, ‘Sir, I'm not trying to be rude but I don't deserve to deal with this right now either.’”

Powers said she normally doesn’t seek media attention. “This isn't OK,” she said, however. “I'm a very private person. I usually don't put myself out there like that. … I just wanted some kind of accountability.”

Just weeks ago, Kimberly Cheatle stepped down as director of the Secret Service after Donald Trump was shot in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last month.

Failures from the agency prevented early enough detection and action to prevent 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks from getting onto a nearby roof and shooting at the former president.

The bullet that grazed Trump's ear was just centimeters from his head. And other rally goers were not as lucky, with one dying and two others sustaining critical injuries before the Secret Service neutralized the shooter.

Social Media is up in arms over the latest 'violation' and calls the incident an 'act of tyranny.'

'The salon owner needs to press charges w/local SO or police. The agents should be arrested for this,' one X user wrote.

Another said: 'This is an unforgivable act of tyranny by the Secret Service—an appalling abuse of power that spits in the face of every principle this country stands for.'

It should be standard advance recon that they ensure there are facilities for them to use, and pay any necessary fees to cover clean up costs, etc. The Secret Service has become a disgrace.

I do know for a fact that the Secret Service is often assigned to locations to work long shifts without bathrooms or refreshments available, but all they had to do was politely ask and I'm betting any shop owner would be more then happy to let them use their facilities. I'd say this merchant is due more than an apology. Enough to prevent a lawsuit.

They can also rent a port a potty. They go right to breaking in and concealing evidence. This is something they are doing regularly from the sound of things.

They are guilty of breaking and entering. Will they be fired? Will the supervisor be fired? Will they be charged with Be? Everyone knows they won’t be. Just another government entity out of control.

U.S. Secret Service Breaks into Massachusetts Hair Salon and Tapes Over Security Camera, Allegedly to Let People Use the Bathroom During Kamala Harris Fundraiser.

On July 27, the Four One Three Salon in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was forcefully entered by Secret Service agents ahead of Kamala Harris’s first in-person fundraiser since becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee, the Business Insider first reported.

The salon’s owner, Alicia Powers, had already complied with the Secret Service’s requests by closing her business for the day to accommodate the security needs of the event, which was being held at the nearby Colonial Theatre.

However, what transpired next left Powers feeling violated and betrayed. According to Powers, Secret Service agents took it upon themselves to enter her locked salon, use her bathroom, and tamper with her security cameras—all without her consent.

Security footage obtained by Business Insider showed a female Secret Service agent taping over the lens of a Ring security camera located at the salon’s entrance.

The agents then proceeded to break into the salon, triggering the security alarm and using the facilities for nearly two hours before leaving the building completely unsecured.

“When I got back to my phone, it was actually closer to 2:30 before I caught that. When I saw that people were in here I literally got in my car I raced here they had already essentially cleaned up and left,” Powers told iBerkshire.

“When I got back here, my front door was left unlocked. I don’t know how long it was unlocked for and that’s essentially the the gist of what happened. They were walking around in here for a good hour and a half, my alarm was going off the entire time, that should have alarmed somebody that maybe you shouldn’t be in the building.”

As Powers explained, multiple people—including emergency medical personnel and law enforcement— were inside to use the bathroom without permission.

To her dismay, the Secret Service agents had not only violated her property but had also left it vulnerable by failing to relock the door or remove the tape from the security camera.

Despite multiple attempts to address the situation with local law enforcement and the Secret Service, Powers was initially met with indifference.

The Pittsfield Police, who were supposed to be coordinating with the Secret Service, claimed they had no knowledge of the incident. It was only after Business Insider contacted the Secret Service for comment that the agency acknowledged the wrongdoing and issued a belated apology.

“I really felt good about that and that’s all I wanted out of the situation was accountability,” she told iBerkshire. “Because if we do something wrong in the community and we get in trouble, we’re held accountable and we have to make sure that we follow through with that and that’s all that I was asking for.”

The agency’s response was weak at best. They offered an apology and promised to cover the costs incurred by Powers due to their intrusion.
