Detroit Zoo says its 26-year-old gorilla, Bandia, is the mother

This is the first birth of a gorilla at the zoo in its 96-year-history. Zoo officials say the family of primates, including the 36-year-old silverback gorilla father, are doing fine. The baby gorilla that was born about 2 a.m. is reportedly strong, and is vocalizing with its mother. The infant joins his parents and two other gorillas and 12 chimpanzees in the zoo's four-acre habitat.
