Chichén Itzá is an ancient ruined Maya city located in the Yucatán state, Mexico, covering an area of 4 square miles. It served as a religious, military, political, and commercial center and was believed to have been inhabited by around 35,000 people at its peak. The first inhabitants settled there around 550 AD, likely due to the easy access to water in the region through caves and sinkholes in limestone formations, known as cenotes.
