The Columbia Catacombs have been around for hundreds of years, since before the Civil War. According to legend they were used to move soldiers back forth underground during the war and supposedly there are still remains of the soldiers in some of these tunnels, hence the name 'Catacombs.' They were also supposedly used during the prohibition to brew liquor and move it throughout the city. Most of the entrances were by the Saluda River, but this entrance was found very well hidden and closer to the heart of the city. On this day we ventured this section of the tunnels, to see if we can find any truth to the legends.

These legendary tunnels have been called 'catacombs' for decades because in 1888 a student entered the basement of Desaussure College and found human remains in the tunnels, including a deceased Civil War soldier shielding the remains of a small African American girl.
