The power plant is all that remains of the old CCI prison, known to locals as “The prison from hell”. CCI was a large downtown prison that was built in 1867 and was demolished in 1999. The details of this prison are truly harrowing. There was a lot of death and overcrowding, which eventually led to its closure. The city offered tours of the prison briefly between its closing-demolition. Locals who dared this tour reported the prison was “terrifying” and “spooky”. After the prison was gone, they built apartments over the old land. Those apartments are reportedly haunted and some even say if you ride by and look into the windows you can see faces lurking. All that physically remains now is the power plant portion that powered the prison during its years open. It runs underneath the highway and opens up onto the other side. The building itself is not too big, but packs a large industrial feel. There are a few large pieces of equipment, a ladder upstairs, and a jail house door covering the tunnel from under the road. It has a lot of windows, presumably to keep it well ventilated. It has been said prisoners slaved away in here in well over 100° conditions. Now, it serves as a reminder of the states not so perfect past and also as a haven for the homeless population. The grounds are littered with empty methadone bottles, needles and trash. There has been rumors it has been recently used for a sex trafficking ring and facilitates a lot of crime.

Anytime you are urban exploring make sure that you are respectful of all local laws, if you see a no-trespassing sign or private property, be sure to leave immediately. Do not damage any property or take anything that does not belong to you. Always show the utmost respect for whatever you are exploring and other people's property.
