Down the Grand Staircase, Permian, Triassic, Jurassic sedimentary layers. We explore the Chinle with an eye out for its notorious petrified wood and end up finding mostly petrified palm holes. The somewhat older steep angle layers are caused by regional basin extension of the Las Vegas Shear Zone on the other side of the Permian layers while the low angle Miocene layers where tilted later by the Colorado River extensional valley rifting.
