Mesa police identified a woman who died in an officer-involved shooting after she allegedly threatened her boyfriend with a knife, investigators said.

According to Mesa Police Sgt. Richard Encinas, officers responded to a neighborhood near Brown Road and Country Club Drive around 10:30 a.m. after the suspect’s roommate called 911, saying 24-year-old Rachel Rodriguez was armed with a knife and wouldn’t let her boyfriend leave the home.

When officers arrived, the roommate was outside the house, but the couple was still inside. They tried talking to Rodriguez over a loudspeaker to get her to come out.

Police said they then heard the man yelling and screaming, which prompted police to go inside the home immediately.

As officers entered the house, one officer shot Rodriguez and rescued the man. She died at the scene.

The boyfriend wasn’t hurt. No officers were injured.
