An ex-convict has been charged with first-degree murder for allegedly shooting to death the mayor of a tiny North Carolina town and his wife inside their home.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office said 25-year-old Keith Williams, of Tarboro, was arrested on Thursday in the killings of Leggett Mayor Gary Skelton and Jackie Dawn Skelton.

Prison records cited by WITN indicate that Williams had just been released from prison last Tuesday on parole after serving a sentence for possession of a firearm by a felon.

Williams has a lengthy criminal record including convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, larceny, and assault on a child.

Charlotte Observer reported that Gary Skelton, 70, was a banker at BB&T in Rocky Mount until retirement. He was in his second four-year term as mayor of the eastern North Carolina town of Leggett with a population of around five dozen.

According to criminal records obtained by the News & Observer, WIlliams was released on parole from state prion on Aug. 28, just more than a week before the double murder.

The suspect had been serving consecutive sentences for convictions dating back to April 2017, including possession of a firearm by a felon and assault with a deadly weapon. WIlliams in March 2013 was also convicted of felony larceny and put on probation, which was revoked a year later due to other offenses.
