Panic at sea as billionaire superyachts crash into each other

Even billionaires can’t escape embarrassing traffic accidents, it seems. Footage has been published of a terrifying crash involving two superyachts, the ‘Lady Moura’ belonging to Mexican telecoms magnate Ricardo Salinas, and the ‘Venus,’ belonging to Steve Jobs’ widow Laurene, off the Italian coast of Naples in July. Both vessels were reportedly anchored at the time, but a freak gust of wind put them both on a collision course, and footage shows crew members screaming and shouting as they desperately try to avoid each other, without success.

Although the footage suggests the Venus was responsible for the collision, both crews are blaming each other, with the Venus claiming the Lady Moura was anchored with twice the length of chain needed, and that they had actually swung into them.

Salinas has commented that the resulting damage was ‘nothing more than a scratch. But it was a big scratch it’s going to cost a lot to fix it.’ He added that he’d shared the video to show that there were ‘still idiots in the world.’
