Reading of the 1560 Geneva Bible - Day 220 of 366 (Daniel 5-6) Season 2 - "The Handwriting on the Wall and the Fiery Den"

Chapter 5: The Fall of Belshazzar

In tonight's reading, the scene opens with King Belshazzar of Babylon hosting a lavish banquet, indulging in excess alongside his nobles. In a moment of arrogance, he commands that the sacred vessels, taken from the temple in Jerusalem, be brought forth to toast their gods. During the revelry, a mysterious hand appears and inscribes a cryptic message on the palace wall, instigating terror among the guests. As the king’s wise men scramble to interpret the writing, they arrive at a dead end.

The queen intervenes, recalling Daniel, known for his wisdom and ability to interpret dreams and puzzling signs. When Daniel is brought before Belshazzar, he reveals the meaning of the inscription, declaring that the king’s reign has been weighed and found deficient—his days are numbered. That very night, the prophecy comes true as Belshazzar is killed, and Darius the Mede takes over the kingdom, marking a significant turning point in Babylon’s history.

Chapter 6: Daniel in the Lions' Den

The narrative shifts to Darius, who decides to appoint leaders over his newly acquired kingdom, with Daniel standing out among them due to his exceptional abilities. This sparks jealousy among the other officials, who plot to discredit Daniel. They convince Darius to enact a decree that forbids prayer to any entity other than the king himself for a thirty-day period.

Unfazed, Daniel continues to pray to God three times a day, openly disregarding the new law. His actions lead to his arrest, and, adhering to the decree, Darius reluctantly orders him to be thrown into a den of lions. The king, distressed and unable to save Daniel, spends a restless night worrying about him.

The next morning, Darius rushes to the den and is astonished to find Daniel unharmed, thanks to divine protection. Daniel explains that God sent an angel to shut the mouths of the lions, demonstrating the power of faith. Overjoyed, Darius orders Daniel to be lifted out, and those who conspired against him are thrown into the den instead, meeting a grim fate. Darius then acknowledges the sovereignty of Daniel's God, issuing a decree that all in his kingdom should revere the Lord.

Thus, these powerful stories remind us of the consequences of pride and the strength that faith can provide, even in the most perilous of circumstances.
