Mérida is located less than 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the northeastern part of the state of Yucatán. It borders to the east with Quintana Roo, to the west with Campeche and to the north with the Gulf of Mexico. Yucatán has a very flat topography and is located very close to sea level.

The bicentennial zoo is a work carried out by the city council of Mérida to celebrate the 200 years of Mexican independence. On February 8, the first stone was laid.
