General George Washington, Commander-In-Chief Of The Continental Army, Created The Badge Of Military Merit, An Award Intended To Recognize Exceptional Bravery And Meritorious Service By American Soldiers During The Revolutionary War.

This Commendation, Which Later Became Known As The Purple Heart, Was Established At Washington's Headquarters In Newburgh, New York.

The Original Design Featured A Purple Cloth Heart Edged With Silver, Symbolizing Courage And Sacrifice.

Initially, Only Three Soldiers Are Known To Have Received The Badge: Elijah Churchill, William Brown, And Daniel Bissell, Jr.
