The Florida student who has autism spectrum disorder went viral for violently assaulting his teacher has been sentenced to five years in state prison.

Brendan Depa, a 6-foot-6-inch, 270-pound teenager, attacked his teacher, Joan Naydich, after she confiscated his Nintendo Switch.

Depa's mother, Leanne Depa, criticized the "system" for failing her son.

"He's not a thug who lacked parental care. It was the system's failure that placed him in public school, and his IEP (Individualized Education Program) was not followed," she stated.

"People should have known better than to use his Nintendo Switch, which was his trigger, as a motivator."

Depa's sentence includes five years in prison, followed by 15 years of probation.
