Bangladesh’s Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will lead the interim government after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down and fled due to a mass uprising, primarily led by students.

The announcement came from President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s press secretary, Joynal Abedin, who mentioned that the other members of the Yunus-led government would be determined soon in consultation with political parties and stakeholders.

Leaders of the student protests, military chiefs, civil society members, and business leaders met with the president for over five hours to decide on the interim administration head.

The students had proposed Yunus, who agreed and is expected to return from Paris soon. Following the decision, student leaders expressed satisfaction with the outcome, Al-Jazeera has reported.
