Wat Phra Thaen Dong Rang Worawihan is located in the Tha Maka District of Kanchanaburi province . It’s located on the border of Kanchanaburi and Nakhon Phantom, about an hour and a half outside of Bangkok.

Wat Phra Thaen Dong Rang is an ancient temple that contains a large stone in the shape of a bed mattress. It is sacred to the Thais due to it being a replica of the holy stone bed on which the Buddha sat on when he went to nirvana.

This stone is seen as a pantheon which reminds people about the time where Buddha went to nirvana at Salavanothayan, India. Thus, the bed of the Buddha here is an imitation but very important spiritually.

It is made of a flat rock that is shaped like a bed. Previously, there used to be two Shorea siamensis on both sides of the bed. There are also many more ancient remains which are related to Buddhism around the area. A few important items are the Boa Buan Pra Osot, a small temple of Ananda, an ancient wooden Buddha footprint as well as local museum.

In the middle of April of each year, there is a big festival held here at this temple.

There is no evidence that shows when exactly Wat Phra Thaen Dong Rang was built. It has been presumed that the temple may build in the same period of time when other sacred places in the area were discovered, which is in the reign of Phra Chao Borom Kote during the Ayutthaya era.

Wat Phra Thaen Dong Rang and the small temple of Phra Taen were stated in long lyrical Thai poetry about a novice named Klan as he was once here to pay homage to Phra Thaen Dong Rang with Sunthorn Phu in 1833.

Later, King Bhumibol gave permission to bestowed Phra Thaen Dong Rang the status of Royal temple of the first grade. The Fine Arts Department registered Phra Thaen Dong Rang as a national historical site in January 1946.

Wat Phra Thaen Dong Rang Worawihan stands on a huge area of over 20,000 acres.

It’s a very interesting temple and worth a bit of your time if you are in the area. The unique stone death bed is something unusual and not found in most temples. The large Chinese seated Buddha and local museum is also something to see here.
