Northern Fleet Arctic group sails off to Arctic Ocean

05.08.24 - Today, Northern Fleet Arctic grouping has sailed off to another mission to the Arctic Ocean. The event has been held annually for 13 years now. The mission will be carried out under the flag of Deputy Commander of the Northern Fleet Vice Admiral Oleg Golubev.

In the morning, ships involved in the Arctic mission sailed off the Northern Fleet's homeport, Severomorsk, supported by mine-sweeping group of the Kola Flotilla of Diverse Forces through the Kola Bay and formed a movement order in the Barents Sea. Afterwards, a detachment of ships and support vessels took a course to the north.

The detachment includes the large anti-submarine ship Vice Admiral Kulakov, from which the forces are controlled, the large landing ship Aleksandr Otrakovsky, the rescue tugboat Altay, and the tanker Sergei Osipov.

During this mission, the Northern Fleet ships will traditionally conduct a series of exercises to ensure the safety of maritime traffic and other maritime economic activities of the Russian Federation in the Arctic Zone, as well as to defend Russia's island and continental areas in the Arctic.

The mission includes:
– artillery missile training;
– amphibious landing operation on unequipped shore;
– defence of sea routes;
– defence of Russia's maritime economic activities in the Arctic Zone;
– team training and exercises involving anti-submarine aircraft and coastal troops.

'A total of about 20 tactical exercises are planned,' said Task Force Commander Captain 1st Rank Stanislav Varik.

A crew of ships will sail seven seas, reach the Arctic Ocean, and conduct a series of tactical and naval exercises during a short period in the Arctic.

The crews practised teamwork in the Barents Sea a few days earlier. They held a communication exercise. A series of combat service support exercises along with ship in disaster rescue drills. In addition, ships and vessels have performed anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, and anti-sabotage exercises of the detachment at sea crossing and in an undefended roadstead.

Another Arctic mission by ships and support vessels of the Northern Fleet is carried out as part of a series of measures designed to safeguard the interests of the Russian Federation in the Arctic. It is planned that the ships and support vessels of the Northern Fleet will sail for about two months through the seas of the Arctic Ocean, including the Northern Sea Route.

Earlier, during previous Arctic missions, the Northern Fleet's Arctic Group of Forces had carried out several exercises to ensure the safety of the offshore ice-resistant fixed platform Prirazlomnaya. It carried out assault landings in the northernmost part of the country, at Cape Chelyuskin (Taimyr Peninsula), Bolshevik Island (Severnaya Zemlya (Northern Land) archipelago). The Arctic detachment had also trained with the Northern Fleet's tactical task forces on Kotelny Island (New Siberian Islands) and Alexandra Land Island (Franz Josef Land archipelago) in joint efforts to protect the island territories. The Northern Fleet also traditionally conducts a series of rescue exercises close to the Northern Sea Route.
