The question, "How can someone with malicious intent mess with my network?" can be answered using penetration testing. White hats and DevSec experts can hack the system and use pen-testing tools to scan networks and applications for bugs and vulnerabilities at any stage of the production and deployment process.

The Metasploit Project is among these tools for penetration testing. This open-source, Ruby-based framework supports both GUI and command-line modifications for testing. It can also be coded to be expanded and accommodate more languages, functioning as an add-on.
