A Pheasant Shows The Car Who's The Boss

Pheasants can be found living alone or in small flocks. Even though they are perfectly able to fly fast for short distances, they prefer to run. Not only are they good runners but they can also be quite territorial, especially with their population growing rapidly in some parts of the US, due to the vested efforts of local authorities. But how fast and how territorial are they really?

As you can see in the video on the top of the page, made on February 21, 2014, in Denmark, Wisconsin, USA, a rooster pheasant can make the Road Runner look like a lead-foot granny! The maker of this video explains: "I am a rural mail carrier in northeast Wisconsin, this awesome pheasant would come and race every day. Many days he would first appear flying right alongside the driver's window to catch up, then start running beside the car!"

So, not only are pheasants fast, but they also like to measure strength with “animals” larger and stronger by far. If our mail carrier wouldn’t occasionally stop to check the wellbeing of the bird, this competitive spirit would keep running without even attempting to fly for a whole 200 to 500 yards and can do this at speeds of up to 10 miles an hour. And, at least the pheasant in this video, it is running bravely, telling the entire world who really owns this remote piece of road! de the car!"
