My name is Estácio de Sá, and I am here to share the story of my life and my journey to establish the city of Rio de Janeiro, a tale of courage, conflict, and the founding of a vibrant city in the New World.

I was born in 1520 in Santarém, Portugal, into a family with a rich maritime tradition. From a young age, I was drawn to the sea and the promise of adventure and discovery that it held. My uncle, Mem de Sá, was the Governor-General of Brazil, and it was under his guidance that I embarked on my most significant mission.

In the mid-16th century, the French had established a foothold in the Guanabara Bay area, which they called "France Antarctique." This posed a threat to Portuguese interests in Brazil, and my uncle tasked me with expelling the French and securing the region for Portugal. In 1565, I set sail from Portugal with a fleet of ships and a group of determined settlers and soldiers.

Upon arriving in Guanabara Bay, I established the settlement of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on March 1, 1565. The name was chosen in honor of Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of soldiers, and to mark the Portuguese claim to the region. Our settlement faced immediate challenges, as the French and their indigenous allies resisted our presence fiercely.

The conflict was intense and prolonged. We built fortifications and engaged in numerous battles, striving to protect our fledgling settlement and drive out the invaders. It was a harsh and dangerous environment, but our determination never wavered. The struggle culminated in the Battle of Guanabara Bay in January 1567, where we finally succeeded in defeating the French forces and their allies.

Tragically, I was wounded in the battle, and despite the victory, I succumbed to my injuries on February 20, 1567. My life was cut short, but I took solace in knowing that my efforts had secured Rio de Janeiro for Portugal, paving the way for its future growth and prosperity.

Reflecting on my life, I see a story of bravery, leadership, and the relentless pursuit of a vision. Founding Rio de Janeiro was not just a military victory but the beginning of a city that would become one of the most important and iconic in the world.

I hope my tale inspires you to embrace challenges with courage, to fight for your beliefs, and to contribute to the creation of a better future. May my journey encourage you to pursue your goals with passion and determination, no matter the obstacles you may face.
