Why the Redemptor ? -267

Man having sinned had to make amends. However since the rebellion against god was of infinite gravity and given his finite nature further corrupted by sin man could not offer compensation commensurate with the offence. In this situation, only God could help him. And that is what He did, taking on His responsibility, as our Creator, manifesting His fatherly heart, revealing His mercy, He sent His word, to assume our humanity and lift it up from the depths to which it had fallen. Consider, for example, what humanity was like upon leaving the earthly paradise, the life of prehistoric men, living almost like beasts, and to whom it would certainly have been futile to ask to love their enemies (Mt 5.44) and it will be understood God could only gradually uplift humanity until it ultimately embodied the infinite holiness of Christ.
