This Week’s Lesson

We are in Lesson-05 in the series “Rebuilding on the Solid Rock” from the book of Ezra.

This is Volume I of our series: “After the Exile” a study of Ezra-Nehemiah-Esther.

The lesson is titled “Rebuilding Amidst Opposition” and our focus passage is Ezra 4:1-5.

Please find your way in your Bible to that passage.

In our previous episode, we concluded our study of Ezra 3, The Restoration of Worship.

In that chapter the author chronicled the events that occurred in the first couple of years after that first wave of Exiles returned from Babylon.

The Jewish exiles gathered as one person to Jerusalem. This faithful remnant was stirred by Yahweh to return and to rebuild.

They rebuilt the altar of burnt offerings and laid the foundation of the temple.

They knew that they needed to get their worship right in order to have an ongoing fruitful relationship with Yahweh.

In today’s lesson we will begin our study of Ezra 4. In our study to this point everything has been positive for the Jewish Exiles in their return to the land.

They received release and support from King Cyrus of Persia. They were divinely stirred to return and to rebuild the Temple.

They arrived safely back to the land. They had the resources needed for the task of rebuilding the Temple. They were one small but unified community, ready to obey the Torah.

They were fully committed to the LORD. They had just finished the work to restore the proper worship of Yahweh, and they had a great celebration.

However, things are about to change as we move ahead to CH4. Opposition will rise and it will be relentless.

Let’s get started.
