On January 15, 2023, Athens-Clarke County police responded to a single vehicle accident on Barnett Shoals Road. The vehicle's occupants were all part of the University of Georgia football program, which had just celebrated its second consecutive national championship earlier in the day. Two of the four occupants did not survive, and alcohol was later determined to be an influencing factor in the accident. Police learned of a second vehicle, driven by top NFL prospect Jalen Carter, that had been at the scene, and after an investigation, Carter was charged with reckless driving and racing, both misdemeanors. He pled guilty to both and was sentenced to 12 months of probation and 50 hours of community service. This is video of Carter's interactions with the police the night of the accident.
