In the vision, the woman John saw represented religious Babylon. She was adorned with gold, jewels, and pearls.

This description serves to reinforce the idea that the religious entity known as Babylon is strongly supported by the wealth and status of the world. This is not an individual who is impoverished, ostracized, or disgraced; rather, it is one who is celebrated and held in high regard by the global community. Nevertheless, she is spiritually and morally bankrupt. In her grasp is a golden cup brimming with abominations and sexual immorality. This point is related to the comparison of idolatry to sexual sin as presented in the Bible (Ezekiel 16:16). Additionally, John's vision also illustrates the decadence of banquets held during the first century, which involved instances of inebriation and sexual immorality. It is conceivable that the woman is engaged in a toast to the beast from the sea (Revelation 13:1), the formidable world ruler with whom she has formed an alliance.
