Causes of Narcissism

Narcissism is a personality trait characterized by an excessive preoccupation with oneself and an inflated sense of self-importance. It exists on a continuum, ranging from healthy self-esteem to pathological narcissism, known as narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Individuals with narcissistic traits often seek admiration and validation from others, exhibiting behaviors such as grandiosity, entitlement, and a lack of empathy. They may manipulate relationships to maintain their self-image and often react with hostility or defensiveness when their self-esteem is threatened. While moderate levels of narcissism can be normal and even beneficial, extreme forms can lead to significant interpersonal difficulties and emotional distress, impacting both the individual and those around them. Understanding narcissism is crucial for recognizing its effects and addressing potential challenges in personal relationships and mental health.
