In Greek mythology, Dionysus is the god of wine, festivity, and pleasure. He is also associated with fertility, vegetation, orchards, fruit, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theater. The Greeks also called him Bacchus, a name that comes from the frenzy, or baccheia, that he is said to inspire.
